The Glaucoma & Cataract Center of New Jersey is the premier glaucoma and cataract practice in New Jersey. It was founded by Dr. Amir Cohen MD, MBA with the mission of providing individualized medical and surgical treatment plans to maximize the vision of patients suffering from glaucoma or cataracts.
Dr. Cohen has performed over 8,000 surgeries and specializes in complex and combined cataract and glaucoma surgery, as well as other treatments. He is committed to preserving the vision of patients suffering from cataracts, at risk of developing glaucoma (glaucoma suspect) or requiring glaucoma medical therapy, glaucoma laser treatment or glaucoma surgery.
Board certified glaucoma and cataract specialist
Dr. Cohen is a board certified ophthalmologist. He is Yale fellowship-trained in advanced glaucoma and cataract surgeries. He also spent over a decade as a professor of ophthalmology at Rutgers University.

Dr. Cohen is a thought leader in his field, consults for diagnostic, medical device and pharmaceutical companies, holds medical patents, performs research and conducts medical trials.
Extensive experience with complex presentations and surgeries
Dr. Cohen has performed over eight thousand surgeries, including complex combined glaucoma and cataract surgeries. He has successfully treated many advanced stage and monocular patients.

Dr. Cohen serves as medical director of the Livingston Surgery Center at Barnabas Health and deeply cares about patient safety and outcome.

I want to thank Dr. Amir Cohen for saving my vision - yes I said saving my vision. At a very low point in the health of my eyes a close friend recommended I see Dr. Cohen. Without going into too much detail I want anyone needing a Glaucoma Specialist to know that since being under Dr. Cohen’s care the condition of my eyes health has improved beyond my wildest dream. When I first saw him I had a dried out and shriveled Cornea which was causing severe pain and high eye pressure. Dr. Cohen performed surgery on my left eye which has lowered the pressure substantially and prescribed eye drops for both eyes to normalize the pressure. I now have pressure in both eyes that is exactly where it needs to be to maintain my vision. I can’t thank Dr. Cohen enough and I highly recommend him.

February 7, 2023I was referred to Dr Cohen.by my ophthalmologist for my glaucoma and cataract. I had post shingle nerve pain in that eye and was very concerned about the surgery. My cataract was also quite dense and I was afraid but it turned out very well. Dr. Cohen performed the Ahmed valve surgery first and it was a complete success. I had to call him at home the day after as I had questions, and he was so nice and explained everything to me. In the past I had a doctor chastise me for calling his service on a weekend. Not Dr. Cohen; he is a true professional who cares about his patients. His staff has always been polite, as well. I highly recommend Dr. Cohen for his skill and compassion.

Being a professional artist I have always been careful of my eyes and hands. I was scared to death when I started to develop cataracts. I now see better than I did when younger. Dr. Cohen and his staff were wonderful through the whole process. Don't be afraid of the surgery if you need it. You're in good hands.

Having my cataracts removed and multi-focal lenses implanted was one of the best decisions I've made and, I am beyond happy with Dr. Cohen. The office staff is very accommodating, pleasant and easy to work with. Without hesitation I would recommend Dr. Cohen!!

After reading about Dr. Cohen's history, I was immediately touched about the story of his grandmother losing her site to glaucoma and that he dedicated his life's work to helping others with this disease. I had several successful procedures and am happy to have found a talented doctor with an exceptional bedside manner. He immediately gave me the feeling that he cared and would do whatever necessary to preserve my sight. Although for me it is a quite a trip to get to his office, it is worth every mile. His staff also go out of their way to ensure you are comfortable and have all your questions answered. I feel blessed to have found Dr. Cohen and would recommend him to anyone.

Glaucoma
What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a condition where the nerve that sends images from the eye to the brain is damaged. It is usually caused by high eye pressure and can lead to vision loss. Glaucoma is sometimes referred to as the “silent thief” because it can gradually steal a person’s vision without pain or symptoms.
Fortunately, we can test for glaucoma in our Livingston, NJ office. With regular eye exams, early detection, and proper medical care, you can preserve your sight and prevent vision loss.
Cataracts
What is a cataract?
A cataract is the clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye. Individuals with cataracts complain of blurred or decreased vision.
